First Floor Art Gallery

Christchurch

The brief for the flooring at First Floor Gallery was clear: a space that feels light, airy and modern. A backdrop that would not compete with the artwork, but elevate it.

Retaining the existing stairwell was central to the brief, preserving part of the original building fabric. The result is a deliberate interplay between old and new, where the character of the existing structure sits against the refined finish of the new oak. The transition becomes part of the experience, grounding the gallery in its architectural history while lifting it with contemporary detail.

Originally specified in Picasso, the decision was made on the day of delivery to pivot to Blanc. A quick but intentional change that turned the space into a true blank canvas, letting the artworks speak without distraction. The soft, neutral tone of Blanc carries natural light and creates a calm atmosphere that adapts to each new exhibition.

The micro bevel on Marchand boards adds a quiet architectural precision underfoot, holding the modern aesthetic while keeping the plane continuous throughout the space.
