La Forêt Oak, a natural smoked European oak floor

Oak Stairs and Stair Nosing NZ

Oak stairs and stair nosing in the same board, colour and finish as the floor they meet. A 2200mm length halves into two treads for a standard New Zealand flight, so the timber arrives already sized to the detail.

The dimension

The board was drawn to the stair, not the stair to the board

Our founders spent years building before they founded Marchand, and they drew the board around the detail that had cost them the most time on site.

Two treads to a board

Two treads to a board

Most oak is milled to whatever length suited the mill. Ours was not. A 2200mm board halves into two treads for a standard New Zealand flight, so a single length serves two steps and every join falls where the drawing says it should.

That is where the cost comes out. It is not a discount, it is arithmetic.

Covers a finished tread to 1090mm. Typical flight: 300mm going, 190mm rise.

The bull nose
Section through the Marchand bull nose stair nosing, 70mm deep by 40mm high on a 20mm board

The bull nose

70 by 40mm on a 20mm board, with a 6mm European oak wear layer on both the top face and the return. Supplied in 2200mm sticks, so the nosing follows the same rule as the board and one length serves two treads.

Made to order in every colour, batch matched to the floor it meets.

Two steps per 2200mm stick.

Ways to wrap a stair

Every one of these uses the same board, in the same colour and finish as the floor it meets. What changes is how the timber turns the nose, and how much of it you need.

Heritage, with nosing

Heritage, with nosing

The timeless approach. Tread and riser sit behind a ready made bull nose, which is the fastest of the six to install and the least demanding of the carpenter.

Two half planks per step, plus one half length of nosing. About 3.5 steps per box, two steps per nosing stick.

Contemporary, mitred
Section through a mitred oak stair, a continuous wrap turning the nose without a separate nosing

Contemporary, mitred

A continuous wrap that turns the nose in a mitred corner, with no nosing to interrupt the grain. The most exacting of the six, and the one that reads as a single piece of timber.

About 1.5 half boards per step. Roughly 2.33 steps per box on a flight under 1100mm.

Stair wrap, floating
Section through a floating oak tread wrapped on six sides, cantilevered from a concealed steel carcass

Stair wrap, floating

A fully wrapped six sided tread on a concealed carcass. The offcut from each tread is exactly what the mitred end cap requires, so the waste is designed back into the stair rather than left over from it.

Four planks per tread. Offcuts of about 60mm per tread become the end caps. Each pack covers roughly 1.75 treads.
