Timber Flooring in Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty
The Bay of Plenty is warm, humid and coastal, and it is building fast. Most of what goes down in Tauranga goes down on a new concrete slab.
That is a different problem to an old villa. Newer slabs carry more residual moisture than programmes usually allow for, and the pressure to keep a build moving is exactly where engineered floors get laid too early.
Specifying for Bay of Plenty conditions
- New slabs need time. Concrete continues releasing moisture for months. We recommend testing, documenting, and holding the programme if the reading is not right. This is the single most common failure in fast-building regions.
- Vapour barriers over slabs. Given how new most of the region's concrete is, we recommend one as standard.
- Coastal humidity is sustained rather than variable. That means less seasonal movement than inland Canterbury, but a lower tolerance for laying onto a damp substrate.
- Indoor-outdoor flow is standard in the region. Thresholds at sliders need proper detailing, and that junction is far cheaper to resolve on the drawings than on site. Transitions are specified case by case, so raise it with us early and we will work the detail through with you.
Light and colour
Bay of Plenty light is bright and warm for much of the year, and it will push a warm oak warmer. In north-facing living spaces with a lot of glazing, the greys hold their character better. La Forêt, Vuitton and Lune stay composed where Nectar or Saint-Tropez can read yellow under strong sun.
Order samples and put them on the floor in the actual room, in the middle of the day. It is the only reliable test.
