Choosing a floor from a small sample is difficult. At the showroom the range is laid out as full-size boards, so you can compare colours in natural light, see herringbone beside plank, and look at stair nosings and wall and ceiling boards in the same oak. The studio itself is a working example, with oak running across floors and walls; see it as the Victoria Studio project.

What Canterbury does to a timber floor

Canterbury swings hard. Dry nor'westers, cold still winters and heat-pump-dry interiors move humidity a long way in both directions across a year, and a wide board feels every bit of it.

That is why our boards are 20mm engineered rather than solid, and why we ask for a moisture reading rather than a guess before anything is laid. On post-quake builds over concrete slabs we recommend a vapour barrier as a matter of course. On a suspended timber floor, subfloor ventilation matters more than the board you choose.
