Oak wall panelling in New Zealand
Wooden wall panelling has moved from feature wall to whole room, and what it is made of now matters more than the profile. Our boards are European oak on an engineered core, milled at half the width of the floor plank on a 12mm board, in the same colours as the flooring.
Wooden wall panelling in solid oak, not MDF or PVC
Ours is a 12mm board with a solid European oak face, tongue and groove, laid plank by plank in the same way a floor is laid.
It is the same oak and the same colour as the floor, which is what allows a room to be resolved in one material rather than three that approximate each other.
How oak wall panelling compares on cost
Wall and ceiling boards are one rate per square metre across every colour, sold in full packs of 3.456 square metres. Because the boards fix direct to the substrate, a panelled wall does not need stopped and painted GIB underneath, which changes the comparison more than the rate suggests. Timber wall panelling as an alternative to cedar
Most interior timber linings in New Zealand are cedar or a cedar-look product, chosen for the look rather than the performance. Our wall board is the same oak as the flooring, so a lining can run into a floor without a change in colour or grain.
Ceiling panelling, flat and raked
The same board lines a ceiling. Ceilings are calculated on plan area divided by the cosine of the pitch, with 10% wastage on a flat ceiling and 15% recommended on a raked one. Boards are fixed with adhesive.
Specifying wall and ceiling boards
Wall board is taken off by length rather than area, with a 10% wastage allowance. Boxes cover 3.456 square metres. Independent moisture testing supports an Alternative Solution for internal moisture. Oak wall panelling: common questions
Is this real timber wall panelling, or MDF?
Real timber. Each board has a solid European oak face over an engineered eucalyptus core with a birch backing, 12mm thick and tongue and groove. There is no MDF, PVC or printed surface.

Do the boards need to go over GIB?
No. The boards fix direct to a suitable substrate, so a panelled wall does not need stopped and painted GIB underneath. Confirm the substrate and fixing method for your project with us before work starts.
What is the difference between wall panels and wall boards?
Wall panels are usually pre-made sheets or fluted modules. Ours are individual 120mm oak boards laid plank by plank, so the wall reads as one continuous timber surface rather than a repeated panel.
Can the same boards line a ceiling?
Yes, flat or raked. Allow 10% wastage on a flat ceiling and 15% on a raked one. The same board, colour and finish runs across walls and ceilings.
Will the walls match the floor?
Yes. Every flooring colour is made as a wall board, and the 120mm board is exactly half the 240mm floor board, so every second join on the wall lines up with a join on the floor.
Is oak wall panelling suitable for commercial interiors?
With the right coating, yes. The manufacturer's specification records Group 3 with the standard finish and Group 1-S with an intumescent coating such as Firezone 92. Confirm the group your occupancy needs with your fire engineer.
