Laminate Flooring NZ: Cost, Durability and the Alternatives
Laminate is the most affordable way to get the appearance of oak, rimu or walnut, and for some projects that is exactly the right answer. It is worth understanding the trade-offs before you commit, because most of them do not appear on the quote.
How laminate handles New Zealand humidity
Laminate is a printed decorative layer over a high density fibreboard core. That core absorbs moisture through joins and edges, which produces swelling, edge peaking and delamination. The effect is more pronounced in coastal and subtropical regions.
Auckland averages around 75 per cent relative humidity. Canterbury sits nearer 65 to 70 per cent. Clause E3 of the New Zealand Building Code requires a floor assembly to manage condensation and moisture ingress, which means laminate demands particular care with subfloor preparation, vapour barriers and ventilation. In concrete slab homes where rising damp is a factor, that care is not optional.
The refinishing question, which ends the comparison
Laminate cannot be refinished. A scratch, a dent or a water stain is permanent. The damaged board has to be replaced, and matching a discontinued pattern is frequently impossible.
An oak floor welcomes refinishing. Each sand and seal cycle removes surface damage and returns the grain, and with a 6mm wear layer that cycle is available four to five times. This is the single structural difference between the two products, and everything else follows from it.
Lifecycle, not upfront
Laminate product typically runs $30 to $65 per square metre plus GST, which is genuinely appealing. What is less widely understood is that installation costs much the same as it does for timber, around $100 per square metre plus GST, because the subfloor still has to be prepared, tested and levelled whatever goes on top of it. The product is cheaper. The labour is not.
Most laminate floors reach visible wear, edge damage or a moisture problem within ten to fifteen years, and each replacement carries product, removal, disposal and installation. A well constructed oak floor is sanded and recoated instead, four to five times on a 6mm wear layer. The sustainability arithmetic
Laminate is resin-saturated paper over compressed wood fibre. It is difficult to recycle and generally goes to landfill. Every replacement cycle carries its own manufacturing, transport, disposal and installation footprint.

Where laminate makes sense
Rental property. Temporary fitouts. Staged budgets where the priority is finishing the room now. A short-hold investment where the next owner will choose their own floor. In all of those, laminate does its job.
Where it makes less sense is a house someone intends to live in, because the floor will be replaced two or three times during that occupancy.
