The brief for the flooring at First Floor Gallery was clear: create a space that feels light, airy, and modern, a backdrop that would not compete with the artwork, but instead elevate it.

A key part of the brief was to retain the existing stairwell, preserving elements of the original building fabric. This creates a deliberate interplay between old and new, where the character of the existing structure contrasts against the refined, contemporary finish of the new oak flooring. The transition becomes part of the experience, grounding the gallery in its architectural history while elevating it with modern design.

Originally specified in Picasso, the decision was made on the day of delivery to pivot to Blanc. This quick but intentional change transformed the space into a true “blank canvas”, allowing the artworks to speak without distraction. The soft, neutral tone of Blanc enhances natural light and creates a calm, gallery-like atmosphere that adapts effortlessly to each new exhibition.

The contemporary micro-edge detailing of Marchand boards adds a subtle architectural precision underfoot, reinforcing the modern aesthetic while maintaining a seamless, refined finish throughout the space.
