How to Install Designer Brass Transition Bars with Marchand

When installing premium flooring, the details are what transform a good result into an exceptional one. At Marchand Luxury Oak, we often say that luxury is in the details, and nowhere is that more evident than in the transitions between surfaces.

Designer brass transition bars are one of the most elegant ways to finish the junction between oak flooring and another material, such as tile, carpet or stone. When installed correctly, they provide a seamless visual break while protecting the edges of both materials.

Because Marchand boards are a substantial 20 mm thick engineered oak floor with a 6 mm European oak wear layer, they allow the use of beautifully proportioned brass trims that sit comfortably alongside the floor without looking flimsy or oversized. Below is the recommended method our installers use to achieve a precise, architectural finish.

Why Use Brass Transition Bars?

Brass transitions have become increasingly popular with architects and interior designers because they combine durability with a refined aesthetic.

Unlike standard trims, brass and copper develops a natural patina over time and adds a warm metallic accent that pairs beautifully with oak. In modern interiors, it is often used to create subtle lines that visually define spaces while maintaining continuity across the home.

Common uses include:

• Transitions between oak flooring and tiled bathrooms

• Junctions between timber floors and carpeted rooms

• Doorway transitions between two flooring materials

• Finishing edges where flooring meets stone or concrete

Because Marchand’s boards are wide 240 mm planks, the visual scale of the floor is already bold. Brass and copper trims complement this by introducing a precise, architectural line.

Planning the Transition

Before installation begins, it is important to confirm the height relationship between the flooring and the adjoining surface.

In most cases, the brass trim is positioned so that the top of the brass sits flush with the finished floor height. This ensures a clean transition with no lip or step.

The installer should also confirm:

• The finished floor height of the oak boards (21mm including glue)

• The height of the adjoining material

• The exact location of the transition line

• The length of trim required

Precision here is critical. Because brass trims are highly visible design features, any misalignment will stand out immediately.

Tools and Materials Required

Installing brass transitions is relatively straightforward but requires careful preparation.

Typical materials include:

• Designer brass transition bar (sourced from Marchand)

• High-quality double-sided installation tape

• Pins (19 mm × 1.6 mm recommended)

• Drill and fine drill bit for pre-drilling

• Measuring tools and square

• Rubber mallet or pin hammer

This method has been refined by experienced installers working regularly with Marchand flooring.

Step-by-Step Installation Method

1. Dry Fit the Brass Trim

Start by placing the brass trim into position without fixing it. This allows the installer to confirm:

• The alignment is straight

• The trim sits flush with the flooring

• The length and positioning are correct

If necessary, trim the brass to the exact required length before installation.

2. Pre-Drill Fixing Holes

To prevent the brass from deforming during installation, pre-drill small holes along the centre of the trim.

Spacing typically ranges from 300 mm to 400 mm apart, depending on the length of the transition.

Pre-drilling ensures:

• The brass remains perfectly flat

• Pins can be installed without bending the trim

• The final finish remains clean and professional

This step is essential for achieving a precise result.

3. Apply Double-Sided Tape

Run high-quality double-sided tape along the underside of the brass trim.

The tape performs two important functions:

1. It holds the trim securely in position during installation.

2. It eliminates any potential movement or vibration over time.

Even though the trim will be mechanically fixed with panel pins, the tape adds an extra level of stability.

4. Position the Trim

Carefully place the brass trim in its final location.

Take a moment to confirm:

• The trim is perfectly straight

• The edge lines align with the flooring

• The trim sits tight to the oak boards

Once pressed onto the double-sided tape, it will hold itself in place while the final fixing is completed.

5. Fix with Panel Pins

Using 19 mm × 1.6 mm panel pins, gently fix the trim through the pre-drilled holes.

Drive the pins carefully so they sit flush with the surface of the brass.

A pin hammer or small nail punch is often used to achieve a neat finish.

These pins provide the mechanical fixing that ensures the transition remains secure for the life of the floor.

Achieving a Seamless Architectural Finish

When installed correctly, brass trims should look intentional and refined, almost like a design feature rather than a functional component.

The best installations achieve:

• Perfectly straight alignment

• Minimal visible fixings

• Flush transitions between surfaces

• Clean lines that complement the flooring

Because Marchand boards are manufactured with precise dimensions and consistent thickness, installers can rely on predictable results when pairing them with designer trims.

Why Details Matter

Transitions might seem like a small part of a flooring project, but they play a huge role in the overall finish.

Poorly installed trims can break the visual flow of a space, while well-executed transitions elevate the entire interior.

At Marchand Luxury Oak, we work closely with builders, installers, and designers to ensure every element of the floor, from wide boards to stair details and transitions, contributes to a cohesive architectural result.

Because our boards are engineered for strength and precision, they provide the perfect foundation for incorporating design elements like brass trims.

The result is a floor that not only performs beautifully but also reflects the craftsmanship and attention to detail that defines truly luxurious interiors.

Luxury is in the details
